Sustainability Efforts

Local Guides: Our selected guides appreciate and promote diversity, respecting different traditions, beliefs and practices. Showcasing genuine expressions of culture, only sharing these, and not reproducing or faking similar experiences for travelers. Encouraging interactions with ethnic groups, communities, personalities, and interesting people.  Supporting local wisdom and practices by purchasing and partnering with locals who are authentic even if more expensive. And other endeavors to protect and promote local culture and nature.

Delfin Cruise: Right from the start, Delfin Amazon Cruises has had a continuous commitment to practicing and promoting responsible tourism. They realized they could produce a significant positive impact on the riverine communities to which they have access. For this reason, they created a small program with the local women, to develop handicrafts that would allow them to benefit from our visits. About 5 women were committed to this effort at the beginning, but now there are at least 45 working women in each community. The proceeds of the handicrafts sold onboard help fund an annual program that provides school supplies for children and first aid kits to all the communities along the way. They also work permanently with local guides, who are in charge of cleaning the hiking paths and give support to on board guides, helping them to identify and find plants, insects and other fauna during excursions in the rainforest. Last but not least, the Amazonian fruits and fish served on board are often provided by riverine communities.

Sol y Luna hotel profits, as well as the generosity of benefactors, wholly finances the Sol y Luna Association which pursues inclusion and equality through education for the children of the Sacred Valley song with sustainable work opportunities for local families.

Belmond believes they have a distinct role in perpetuating the Legendary Art of Travel. Their passion to craft incomparable genuine travel experiences comes with a responsibility for safeguarding the beauty that surrounds their properties, as well as the precious local culture that make our guests' stays so unique.  Their “Think Global, Act Local” approach values each property’s first-hand knowledge and recognises the specificities of every context. It allows each local team to develop initiatives and partnerships that have the most relevance to the spaces and the communities that live adjacent to them, maximizing in this way their impact and engagement across three pillars: For setting ambitious sustainability goals as a company, in 2021 they elevated their efforts through a Partnership with EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.
